The Watership Down Series 2 Ending Is Really Stupid

 Campion has been working against Woundwort this whole time, only to save him? It is not convincing Campion would do this. A lot of the spy stuff doesn’t make sense actually, but this is the limit. He has Primrose and Blackberry to protect for a start. Conflicted he might be, yes, but that level should only make him mournful when Woundwort is dead, not prevent it from happening.

There are a lot of implications too, like Campion basically being responsible for every bad thing that happens in series 3. Speaking of series 3, this ending makes Campion’s series 3 setup utterly ridiculous. So, Campion saves Woundwort, and Black Rabbit be like, you’ve got to kill Woundwort now. If this was supposed to be deliberately dark and ironic, it would be super clever. Unfortunately, it clearly isn’t, not to mention that this setup comes to nothing in the end anyway, but I digress.

The big one for me though is that the Watership Downers themselves should not have reacted to Campion’s perceived death the way they did. No, Campion would have been seen as betraying them, regardless of his intentions. 

The thing is that they didn’t need to change much to fix this whole thing. Just have Campion save someone else: Pipkin or Blackberry would be ideal candidates given their reactions and actions in series 3. Heck, you could even keep everything even more the same by making it so Campion has to save Woundwort in the process (case of can’t save them without saving the bad guy too) and have Woundwort misunderstand the whole thing.

The Sea Beast - It Has Problems

I had many qualms with The Sea Beast movie but I can’t remember most of them now, so I’m just going to go with the ones I can remember.  An absolutely brilliant start sets you up for something the movie never becomes, despite later similar scenes. It’s almost like a genre jump, but instead it really just undermines its own set up. As you probably already know I like protagonists fighting with Beasts. What I don’t like is when it’s set up to be this only for it later to become, oh, the Beast is nice and misunderstood, and let’s make some upper-class humans the real villains instead.  Yes, it was okay to have these human characters, in fact they are perfect for the setup of the stakes, but they would have been better as secondary villains or even as simply a device. This so called twist – been done quite a few times now so easy to see coming after that initial give away shot if you know what to look for – undermines everything the movie sets itself up to be before this point....

The Breadwinner - Less To Complain About Than Usual!

When I realised this movie was Nora Twomey (simplifying for clarity) my heart sank. Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, My Father’s Dragon, and Wolfwalkers are great films in theory but by goodness are they slow and boring. Considering all the factors that should make them brilliant, none of these films seem to come off nearly as well as they should – I supposed I would call it somehow drained of interest, as that is how they make me feel. I prepared myself for another disappointment, however, The Breadwinner actually got it right! It is really good, but I should warn you, brutally real. Some people might be disturbed by some parts. The only thing I have to complain about it is yet another movie that ends without really ending. I could do a whole post on this topic in general.
