Miraculous World was a Pain, then I realised I don’t think much of the series either!
The Miraculous Ladybug Movie was brilliant, and corrected many of the issues and questionable things that were in the show. Miraculous World on the other hand . . .
It was boring. It has interesting things in it but somehow they don’t come off as interesting. This show always felt unimaginative and formulaic – as opposed to Phineas and Ferb which is formulaic, but it isn’t a downside and doesn’t feel tired. Miraculous feels tired after three episodes, and feels the same whatever episode in whichever season you watch. World is worse, though, as it feels like one really dragged out episode.
The characters are flat and uninteresting. I mean, you’ve had quite a while to put in some character development. Why are any changes only due to bad writing? The show is like a western animated series mixed with an anime but not using any of the good parts of either, ending up with an uninspiring and unoriginal show that doesn’t seem to be trying to be anything at all. It feels mediocre, and I’m not sure why it was considered worth making given that. But as so many people like it, I guess the creators knew something I don’t. Why people like this show when there is so much better in the same genre and for the same audience I don’t know.
World should have been an opportunity for breaking away from the formula for a while, but instead it is little more than a minor world building exercise (assuming this stuff does become relevant at a later point) plus Hawkmoth yet again.
Fairly Odd Parents follows the same formula every episode but each of Timmy’s wishes makes each episode a completely different story. Miraculous does a lot, lot less to change things up. Even Phineas and Ferb do different things every day with Dr D trying something different. With Miraculous it’s the same inconsequential social situation, plus one akumatised person. You might not actually need to but with the other two shows you feel the need to watch them in order, partly because you want to despite the fact they are episodic, and partly due to investment, but you do not feel this with Miraculous. It rarely makes any difference if you skip whole seasons.
It’s not something I can explain but Hawkmoth gets old very fast in a way, say, Team Rocket from Pokemon does not. But I guess Pokemon has soul, while Miraculous feels like you are watching things being moved about by a computer. It would have been so much better if the new so-thought bad guy was an actual real bad guy – you know, one that was after the power rather than just an amoral money-maker who took things too far kind of guy.
Also, the reasons the characters are in Shanghai in World are so unconvincing, and so obviously just the writers needing them there. It is laughable.
The theme song has also started to really annoy me. I blame too much exposure largely, but the fact still remains that the main part of the theme song as least sounds like it’s for a toddlers’ programme about helping people in the community or something. It is cringy and condescending, the rhymes at best feel unnatural, and as if the writer is trying too hard.
Am I the only one who feels it is trying to rip off the Sailor Moon theme but doing a terrible job? At least “Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight” was alluding to something even if it isn’t strictly true. While “In the daytime, I’m Marinette,” just makes me what to go, you’re Ladybug in the daytime too! There’s also the rhymes. In the Sailor Moon theme you barely notice they are there. In Miraculous you are painfully aware of them. Has anyone really thought about them: “Miraculous, simply the best, up to the test when things go wrong”. Seriously? Would just like to point out, though, that the French lyrics are a million times better.
